Gabbeh rugs are a unique type of Persian carpet, traditionally woven by nomadic tribes such as the Qashqai and Luri in southwestern Iran. These rugs are celebrated for their thick, soft wool pile, bold and minimalist designs, and vibrant, naturally dyed colors. Unlike more intricate Persian carpets, Gabbehs feature simple geometric shapes, stylized animals, or motifs inspired by nature and daily nomadic life.
The word “Gabbeh” means “raw” or “natural” in Persian, reflecting the rugs’ rustic charm and unrefined beauty. Each Gabbeh is hand-knotted using hand-spun wool, often without a strict pattern, allowing the weaver’s creativity and personal stories to shine through. Traditionally, these rugs served practical purposes as bedding or floor coverings in tribal tents, valued for their warmth and durability.
Today, Gabbeh rugs are admired worldwide for their artistic simplicity, cultural authenticity, and the way they capture the spirit of Persian tribal life
