Tabriz carpets, renowned for their intricate designs and high quality, are meticulously handwoven using traditional techniques passed down through generations. These carpets originate from Tabriz, a city in northwestern Iran, known as one of the oldest carpet-weaving centers in the world.
The weaving process begins with the preparation of the loom, where warp threads, usually made of cotton or silk, are tightly stretched. Skilled artisans then hand-knot individual threads onto the warp to create the intricate patterns. Tabriz carpets typically use the symmetrical “Turkish” or “Ghiordes” knot, which ensures durability and precision. The knots are tied row by row, and after each row, the weaver compresses the knots with a comb-like tool to ensure a dense, even pile.
The design of a Tabriz carpet is often inspired by Persian art and culture, featuring floral motifs, medallions, or hunting scenes. The weavers follow a detailed pattern chart, ensuring every detail is flawlessly executed. Once the weaving is complete, the carpet is sheared to achieve an even surface, washed to enhance its colors, and finished with fringes.
This painstaking process results in a masterpiece of craftsmanship, blending beauty, durability, and cultural heritage.
