Rostam, a beloved hero of Persian mythology, is a central figure in Ferdowsi’s epic, the Shahnameh. Born to the mighty warrior Zal and Princess Rudabeh, Rostam’s destiny as a great hero was evident from the start. His strength and bravery were unparalleled, and his loyal steed, Rakhsh, became his trusted companion in countless adventures.
One of Rostam’s most famous tales is the “Seven Labors” (Haft Khan), where he embarks on a perilous journey to rescue King Kay Kavus from a demonic captor. Each stage of this journey tests his courage, wit, and strength as he battles ferocious beasts, cunning sorcerers, and deadly demons. Through his determination and divine favor, Rostam overcomes every challenge, cementing his reputation as a protector of Iran.
Another significant story in Rostam’s life is the tragic encounter with his son, Sohrab. Unaware of their familial bond, the two engage in a fierce battle, resulting in Rostam fatally wounding Sohrab. The revelation of their relationship comes too late, leaving Rostam grief-stricken.
Rostam’s tales symbolize valor, loyalty, and the complexities of fate, making him an enduring symbol of Persian culture and heroism.
