Hamedan carpets are traditional Persian rugs woven in and around the city of Hamedan, one of Iran’s oldest and most culturally rich centers of carpet weaving. These rugs are celebrated for their durability, dense and thick wool pile, and vibrant use of natural colors derived from local plants and minerals, such as deep reds and blues.
Hamedan carpets typically feature geometric patterns, medallions, and sometimes floral elements, reflecting both tribal and town influences. The weaving technique is notable for its use of the Turkish (symmetrical) knot and a unique single-weft construction, which gives the rugs a sturdy texture and allows the warp threads to become part of the visible design.
Due to the diversity of villages in the region, designs can vary widely, but the Herati motif (a repeating flower and leaf pattern) is especially common25. Hamedan carpets are usually made in smaller sizes, though larger urban pieces also exist, and their bold, contrasting color palettes and distinctive patterns make them popular both in Iran and internationally
